Memorial Day Welcome Home!

First Public Viewing of "The Gift" Memorial Day 2019!

Because of the generous donations to the American Indian Veterans Memorial made by 24 tribes, as well as by many businesses, organizations and individuals -- the centerpiece sculpture for the American Indian Veterans Memorial at Riverside National Cemetery is very near completion! THE GIFT, in its twice life-sized bronze version, will be delivered to the Cemetery for a first viewing by the public on Memorial Day 2019.

Memorial Day 2019

Please see and share the "Welcome Home" flyers with your family and friends, but especially with your veterans and their families.  We hope to see many familiar indigenous faces at the short ceremonies described in the flyers.  The first, the “Sendoff” will be held at the Berkley Foundry where sculptor A. Thomas Schomberg has been working. The second, May 27, the “Welcome Home & Blessing” will follow the annual Memorial Day Program at the Riverside National Cemetery.

After the ceremonies, THE GIFT will be transported to a secure location for storage until donations reach the point where construction allows the sculpture to be installed at its Riverside National Cemetery permanent home.  The AIAN Veterans Memorial Committee continues to solicit donations to cover the costs of the surrounding plaza area and two eagle sculptures – and to bank a trust account for perpetual maintenance. Until the total construction and maintenance amounts are available, the National Cemetery Administration will not authorize construction.

Thank you for honoring our United States Military this month – and, of course, for your continued interest in helping to establish the first American Indian Veterans Memorial at a National Cemetery – sacred ground.
